When fighting viruses and spy ware, be careful which programs you download and install. There are a lot of software programs on the Web that are designed to give you viruses, hack into your computer and to get information about you. Some of the ads for these programs are even designed to mimic good known software programs so as to trick you.

A good recommendation for anyone thinking of downloading any software would be to first perform a search for “remove - list the program name here”. If the program has been a problem for others, you will find references for it!

There are many, many names by which these programs are known. Some of the current software programs out there right now that do this include:

We have all seen the construction of ramps for those with mobility challenges, embossed signs for those who are visually challenged, and closed captioning for those who have auditory challenges. These have even been built into our schools so that individuals would not become disabled by artificial barriers in the physical environment.

This is a good first step but it should not stop there. Just as we work to remove physical barriers from an educational environment, we should also remove inflexible educational materials and methods which create artificial barriers to learning. Read the rest of this entry »

Although it is very tempting to get something for nothing, usually it comes at an unknown cost. This is why most folks avoid things that are free on the Internet; they usually come with loads of garbage such as advertising, tracking cookies, and unless you are lucky, viruses and/or spyware.

Lately, however, a growing body of software has come available on the Internet that is both free, and free of the garbage. Read the rest of this entry »

A Podcast is audio or visual content that is made available on the Internet. The name is derived from the Apple iPod product, mixed with the word, “broadcast”. It is just shorted to “Podcast”.

A Podcast can usually be listened to, or watched on demand, or be delivered to your computer automatically through a free subscription. Once you access the Podcast, you can listen or watch on your computer or iPod at your leasure - when YOU want to listen or watch, not just when it is broadcast! Read the rest of this entry »

My wife, son and I moved to northern Maine about six years ago. At that time, we learned that many in this county said that it was, “the way Maine used to be”. In many ways we have found that to be true. People tend to move at a less hectic pace than they do further south in the state. People seem to care for each other, and enjoy the great outdoors. Students in school tend to be better behaved, and in general, there is a much lower rate of crime than there else further south.

Unfortunately, this seems to hold true regarding technology as well. Read the rest of this entry »
